If you are an adult with alignment issues, you know how they can affect your health and self-confidence. You want to do something about it, but you have to wonder – has the opportunity passed you? When is someone too old for braces?
Your Changing Smile
A lot of our smile is dictated by our childhood development, which is part of the reason orthodontists recommend treatment at a young age. However, that doesn’t mean your smile is permanently fixed. Years of pressure and wear from biting and chewing leads to gradual tooth movement. Moreover, if there is misalignment in your smile, your teeth may have uneven wear that makes chewing and digestion less effective.
How Old is Too Old for Braces?
You may be surprised to hear that to an orthodontist that there’s no such thing as “too old for braces.” The last decade has seen a 40 percent increase in adults getting braces. Many adult patients are in their fifties, sixties, and even seventies.
The primary requirement for braces is that the teeth be healthy enough to move. Adult teeth commonly have fillings, crowns, and other dental work, but this likely won’t cause a problem as long as the tooth is sturdy overall. If the teeth are mostly decayed or many teeth are missing, the dentist or orthodontist may recommend a different approach to treatment.
Why Do Adults Get Braces?
Cosmetics are certainly a factor, but there are many health reasons for an adult to consider braces. A straighter smile is easier to clean and reduces the likelihood of gum disease and cavities. Proper alignment also eliminates uneven wear on the teeth. An even bite also reduces the instances of soreness and ache from bite problems, including temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
